Philippine Dynamite Fishing

I was a bit surprised to find that dynamite fishing is still going on so close to a  large metropolitan area but yesterday a Fisherman in Lapu Lapu died when a huge chuck of a coral reef broke away and landed on the man who was standing in chest deep water.

It seems to be not uncommon at all.  A man was killed and his son blinded earlier this year when dynamite exploded before it was tossed into the water.  There was at least one other dynamite fishing death in the area this year.

Lapu Lapu has implemented programs to give fishermen in the area new sources of income, in part, to prevent dynamite fishing to save the coral reef and to prevent these kinds of accidents.

Old ways die hard, especially when those ways are meant to support ones family.
