The supreme court has again ruled 7-6 that the law upgrading Bogo Town and 15 other Philippine municipalities to city status has been revoked.
Bogo is a Town Again
The court ruled the previous ruling was a tie vote of 6-6 could not overturn a majority ruling made the month before.
As I understand it, there was a law that raised the city hood income requirement as set in the constitution. It would seem to this layman that the congress could pass another law to provide for an exemption to the prior law but the court seems to be saying no to that. Republic Act 2009, passed by congress raised the requirement so its surprising to this bystander that the congress cannot pass another law making the exception.
I will be surprised though, if the now ex-cities don’t file another motion to reconsider the reconsideration. The court seemed to
be answering that already but the main reason the motion for reconsideration was granted was the previous tie vote. I’m sure that leaves the door open for the hopeful towns.
If they loose their city-hood permanently, they loose a large amount of funding. The other cities in the Philippines have a monatary interest because with 16 new cities taking a slice of the city pie, they have smaller pieces of pie.
While I do not wish to influence the outcome, even if I could, as one who lives in Bogo Town, I hope the court reverses itself again. I have no idea though, how likely that is. I’m an infant when it comes to Philippine politics and as a foreigner, it is both wrong and illegal for me to attempt to have any influence at all.

A lawyer blogged about this on his site:
http://attylaserna.blogspot.com/2010/09/cityhood-case-long-procession.html
Hey Rusty,
That is a set back, for those people who want Bogo “City” to prosper and become more economically successful.
I forget, how exactly did you come to live in Bogo City, if I remember right, Jessie is from Northern Leyte ..correct ? Just curious.
Take care,
Danny
Jessie suggested Cebu province. She thought I’d be happier in Cebu City since it is more modern.
I met another expat on a forum that use to live in this house. When he vacated it, I jumped on it.
I know the major was complaining during the first round of this that he wanted to develop a diving location within Bogo City. Its still not here though. I like Bogo pretty much the way it is. Maybe I don’t want it to be a city after all. LOL I guess its kind of like rooting for the home team though. The people here want it, for the most part.
I liked Bogo the way it is now too. Although it definitely has some rooms for expansions. But I hope it will not become too big or else it will just be like any other city.
It will become too big. Its not going to shrink so it will grow.
People need jobs. People build, its what we do.
So Rusty, how do I address any mail going there now ? Bogo City or Bogo Town or just Bogo ? Please inform me. Jerry
When I met the local postmaster, he said as far as he was concerned it was Bogo City and will stay that way. LOL
I THINK the proper way would be to add the province. I think Queenie would know better than myself. Bogo Town or blank. I would leave it blank.
I think either will work as the postal code is the same.
I THINK the proper way would be:
Name
Street
barangay
Bogo, Cebu, 6010
philippines
Well, as far as Im concern, Bogo will remain a City forever in my heart and in my mind.
That’s how i love Bogo and that’s how i feel about this beloved place.
For me, literally, i really love Bogo. For that’s was the place i know who i was, who they where and what are the things on my soroundings. im proud to be Bogohanon………
Bogo is a nice place to live.
I guess if one is big on night life, it could leave something to be desired but I could care less about that. Not a fan of malls either.
I wish I could get out more.
Supreme Court again says, BOGO IS A CITY!
Bogo Cityhood, spread the good news.
Hi Ted,
Thanks for sharing this information.
I am surprised because it sounded like even the mayor had given up in his interview that you published on your website.
That’s good news for the Mayor and city workers. I see it was another close vote. I wonder if if it is the final one.
Seems like it would be if they ever rule the same way twice. That should close the door. I’m looking forward to reading more details on the decision. I suppose the League of Cities, I think that’s what it is called will appeal?
