Cebu City Anti-Indecency Board
Those are strange words for most American’s. Though I’m sure some would love to see the USA return to those days. Anyone that knows me at all knows, I really dislike anyone judging others. I dislike it when someone else is being judged. Doesn’t have to be directed at me. I guess one might say, I’m intolerant of those that are unable to accept the choices of others.
This isn’t the USA bud. You don’t have to like it, you don’t have agree with it but how dare you put it down. Expect everything to be different, embrace it, and live it.
However, I will say it again, I choose not to live in the USA and that means taking everything that goes along with it. Doesn’t mean I agree with everything but I try to keep my mouth shut in areas where the government is involved as the government prefers that I keep my mouth shut. Well, at least my opinion. I don’t think they have any problems with foreigners sharing the knowledge and the expectations.
For me, that there is even an anti-indecency board says a lot. Reminds me of boards that existed in the USA at one time, mostly before I was born. The McCarthy Commission era. I think most of those boards though were not government run boards.
At the time of writing this article, there are a lot of articles in the paper regarding massage parlors. Mostly related to what is called liaman massage. You’ll have to look that up if you want to know more. For many in power in Cebu, its not something that is accepted. Some must want it
as the concern is that they are growing at a rapid rate. Does that mean what the people and the government want differ? The Cardinal waded into the matter saying something along the lines that the immorality must be stopped.
I’ll only say, God gives me a choice, least I can do is give “you” one as well. I mean if God thinks we should choose our own way and last I checked, and since I’m a few rungs down the latter from his level, don’t think its my place to choose for you. I guess others feel they are in position to choose for “you.”
Sexual matters are taboo here. To a different level of what most westerners are use too. It is another of the many things you will need to adjust too. Once again, I don’t want to hear someone say “Well, in the USA we do it so and so.” That really makes my bacon sizzle. This isn’t the USA bud. You don’t have to like it, you don’t have agree with it but how dare you put it down. Expect everything to be different, embrace it, and live it. After all, now you’re living in Cebu.

I do like the way you ended that article!
Those are my sentiments exactly. Nothing frosts me more than someone judging someone else when they don’t even know what the hell they are talking about or never walked a mile in their shoes.
Many people in America have a “we are better than you” mentality and have never even been anywhere else in the world. Americans look at life through an American lens. It’s ok to look through your particular lens but just don’t freakin think it is the only way and try to force your “standards” on someone else!!
Thanks for the post!!
Thanks, yes the better than mentality irks me to no end. Perhaps that’s part of the resentment. Thing is, i don’t think most of the people that say those things really believe them.
I think people in a group are more comfortable with disliking something than liking it. Most of the time, one hears negative things when one is with others in a social setting. The complainers are well known. I don’t hang out with expats as much as most others do and that is part of it. Part of it is, I’m just a homebody.
Thanks for joining in, I hope you’ll join in often!
morality in the Philippines is quite curious, i see very few filipinas wearing skimpy bathing attire and most won’t even go out without a bra on but on the other hand there are lots of unwed teens with babies and also though frowned on, prostitution seems alive and thriving
I have trouble with judgmental people. Its a pet peeve of mine I guess. Its one of the few things that I have trouble not complaining about. You know, being one of the complainers.
There seems to be a great deal of hypocrisy in this area. It would seem from the way people tend to judge others here that the country is made up of untouched virgins. yet, there are a lot of people having affairs and a lot of single mothers.
The number of Filipina that have affairs with married men is the one area of the culture that perplexes me. I don’t get it. Its nearly as common as the rain!
There are a couple of girls that have been hanging out at my home a lot, they live in the compound, that have had affairs with married men that use to hang out here a lot. Girls are pregnant and they ran back home to their wives now.
Its an area that interest me. Eventually, I’ll figure out an angle to write about it. Its such a taboo subject. And the expats are the fastest to call each other sexpats.
Just a whole lot of people pointing their fingers at and looking down their nose at others and they ain’t doing anything that they themselves don’t want to do and probably have done. Oh well, I’ll need a xanax if I stay on this subject lol
yeah i understand what your saying and agree completely, god of all places to abandon a pregnant girlfriend, life is hard enough there already but as you know the u.s. has its share of that too.btw i’d go easy on the xanax lol not good for the short term memory[hmmm maybe thats not a bad thing]
I forgot what short term memory is a long time ago.
There is likely more of it in the USA.
There are a lot of judgmental people there too. I grew up in the bible belt after all.
I don’t like it there either. It doesn’t have to be directed at me. I remember lots of times the X2 Unit (x wife version 2) would say something judgmental and it made me climb the walls, why do you care? You do worse!
haha
Hi Rusty,
I have been looking over your website and reading the great info. you have in it. I have been seriously considering retiring in Cebu as early as next year. I have been to the RP many times but it was in the 60s/70s. Loved the place back then and I am looking forward to a visit early next year to be sure it is the right decision for me.
It appears I could live quite well on my SS and a decent nest egg in the bank. My wife Kim and I had been researching this for two years, but sadly she passed away in May and now I really have nothing keeping me here. I plan to sell my business and make the move.
I know the RP has issues, and is not like the US, but the “people” are it’s greatest treasure, and that is what draws me there. I must have viewed over a hundred homemade videos from many expats, and what impresses me the most is the smiling faces of the filipino people.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Regards,
Mike
I agree with you on the smiling faces and the people of the Philippines. As a whole, they are wonderful.
Sorry about your loss. Sad that she will not enjoy the Philippines too.
Your SS retirement will go much further here! I was facing a pretty bleak outlook with only my civil service retirement (much better than SS) with no nest egg. I didn’t do a good job of planning and two divorces certainly didn’t help.
But then, I’m a spend aholoic and I thought retirement was a million years away.
I have a nice life here. Since you’ve been here you do have an understanding of the differences and know that being happy here is up to the person. I was quite shocked when I first got here. The poverty and the things that go with it in our culture concerned me.
Then I began too learn and learn how great Filipino are. I live out of the major cities too so crime and safety are even less of a concern. But, I’ve not seen any place in the Philippines as dangerous as Memphis, Tn. where I carrying a 45 with me, even in my home.. much of the time. Sure there are bad areas. It may get worse, it will get worse but its going to get worse in the States too.
For me, i wonder why everyone doesn’t do this. Even women but many of them might prefer areas I’ve hardly spent any time in. I just can’t think of any reason not to be here!
