Dengue continues to be a hot topic for those living in the Philippines. The Departmental of Health (DOH) has released new information about the high rate of dengue in the Central Visayas Region. That includes those of living in Cebu.
Dengue In The Philippines
Call me old school but I like to see a good dose of blasting the critters with insecticide from time to time.
It is also interesting to note that they are warning against spraying for mosquitoes. This is interesting because just recently a board in charge of fighting dengue with in the province of Cebu announce it was doing just that. I wrote about it in a related article on this site. Click Here to see that article.
In that article, Roselyn a reader and writer of this site asked if there was dengue within the city itself. The prior article didn’t mention the city itself. I suspected it was because the report was from a provincial organization. This new report is from a national department of the Philippine government. So it does include the city. Not only is dengue present in the city, it appears to be one of the hot spots.
Around 8,708 dengue cases have been recorded in Central Visayas this year, up 75% from the 4,961 in 2009.
At least 63 people have died of the disease in the region this year, DOH records show.
According to the DOH, search and destroy is the preferred way of fighting dengue. Call me old school but I like to see a good dose of blasting the critters with insecticide from time to time. I’m sure the DOH is correct but I just can’t help myself.
The DOH has placed six barangay within the Central Visayas in the “Dengue Outbreak” category. Those barangay (villages) are as follows:
- Cebu City
- Guadalupe
- Labangon
- Tisa
- Bohol
- Cogon
- Dao
- Negros Oriental
- Daro
Further, several barangay were placed under the status of “Epidemic Threshold” by the DOH. From what I can gather, this is a level that is less severe than “Dengue Outbreak.” The barangay meeting this level of severity are:
- Apas
- Hipodromo
- Mambaling
- Lahug
- Mabolo
- Talamban

Good job Rusty, keep me posted on the dengue problem. I agree, blast their ass with insecticide. Here in the USA we use malathion to kill them, it does a good job. Maybe you could recommend it to some of the people in charge of killing them that. See ya soon. Jerry
Thanks,
I’ve been writing about dengue a lot because that and birth control may be the hottest topics in the Philippines right now.
The officials here are aware of all the ways to fight it. I don’t know what they are spraying with. I just ran across a Facebook group a while back “I ran behind the mosquito truck and lived to tell about it.” Something like that. Its a fun group, just goofing off and they posted that picture from an old ad which made me laugh.
Hi Rusty,
interesting article! I am a german expat living in Malaysia and Dengue is a problem here too.
I use “Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis” in some wet areas of my garden, it works well. But I had to import some bottles from Germany where you can buy it in hardware stores and garden centres. This bacteria are used as biological control agents for larvae stages. Recently I found out that the Malaysian Government is testing it too.

Conny
Hi Conny,
Nice to hear from you!
This is a naturally occurring bacteria? Organic bug killing. I like it.
A lot of times, here, the government officials seem to be yelling at the people about dengue. I don’t know, seems there would be plenty of places in a rain forest for them to breed. And this is basically one huge tropical rain forest!
Hi Rusty,
I try not to worry to much about Dengue, Malaria and all the other deseases, because you if you live in a tropical country you can not use repelents or prophylaxe all the time. It helps a lot if you screen your windows with mosquito net.
And yes the forests are of course a good breeding place. But if you live in a bigger city, construction sides are a big problem too.
Sanofi hopes to market dengue vaccine by 2015: http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSSIN462955
Greetings to Cebu!

Wow, if they get that out, someone is gonna be super rich.
Of course, they likely already are.
It would be nice if they had it out today instead of 4 more years. What’s the hold up ?
Probably to make sure it doesn’t kill millions of people.
I don’t know where Sanofi is, I can’t watch the video without loading my VPN and I’m lazy…. LOL
