Cebu City (30 September) — Total worth of drugs seized by the Cebu Provincial Police Office (CPPO) from January 1 to September 29, this year reached P9.84 M as police operations continue against illegal drugs.

CPPO Acting Deputy Provincial Director for Operations P/Supt. Teofilo Siclot said that out of the 203 illegal drugs cases for the almost nine months in office, 126 cases have already been filed in court.

Siclot said 49 cases were due to buy bust operations and 97 from saturation drives conducted by the police while 19 cases were applied with search warrants that yielded illegal drugs.

Eighty-nine drug pushers and 122 users have been arrested during the said period, this is reported.  Marijuana is the drug that has been widely confiscated in the province with 43,959 plant stalks, 10,000 seedlings, 5,000 seeds, 6,056 dried leaves and 312 dried marijuana sticks, according to Siclot.

For shabu, 52 grams have been seized and 3,300 vials of Nubain, a potent painkiller that needs doctor’s prescription, this is said.
In Lapulapu City, two level 2 drug pushers have been arrested while drug-related crimes has risen in the city, Lapulapu City Police Director S/Supt. Mariano Natuel claimed.

Natuel said 70 to 80 percent of those put behind bars is due to drug-related crimes as he ordered his men to strengthen operations against illegal drugs.

Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) Director S/Supt. Melvin Buenafe on the other hand, said the volume of drugs in the city went down but did not cite figures.

“There are still drug-infested barangays but the police are closely monitoring these areas for illegal drug activities,” according to Buenafe. He cited the barangays of Kamagayan, Pasila and Hipodromo as areas of concern went it comes to illegal drugs.

Mandaue City Police Office Director S/Supt. Noel Gillamac shared the same view that the drug situation in his city also went down although they will not be complacent as they continue to intensify operations in the city to crack down on criminal elements including those involved in the illegal drugs trade.

Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA-7) Deputy Regional Director Atty. Mauro Licen meanwhile, said the illegal drug situation in the region is within “manageable” level as he added that their agency is increasing its number of operations.

“What we are giving due focus at the moment is the presence of narco-politics as the Barangay and SK Elections draws near,” Licen said.

UPDATE:  Large Drug Bust

The above number don’t include a recent bust made as it would nearly double the above amount:

Anti-drug agents have seized P8 million worth of shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride) from two suspected members of a drug syndicate, said to be the biggest haul this year for the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency in Cebu.

Low Crime Rate

To me these numbers seem low but not surprising.  Perhaps they are high for the Philippines, I’m not sure.   Compared to drug crime in the USA, these point out what I think is a low crime rate.   Sure there is crime in the Philippines but its not nearly what I’m use to when I was living in Memphis, tn..
