Another Ferry Leaves Scores Dead

There are at least 21 confirmed dead and 29 missing after another ferry capsizes in the Philippines.  A ferry traveling from the island of Calayan to the country’s main island of Luzon was caught in rough waters last night and capsized.   The Philippine Coast Guard is conducting a search and recovery operation in the region now.  Some reports indicate that the ferry may have lost power and then was caught in strong currents which soon ripped the boat apart.

Many of the ferries are medium sized boats with bamboo used to help stabilize it.  Bridges and air  travel between this islands is almost non-existent making the use of these low cost and often ill-equipped ferries a necessity of life for Filipino.
