Filipino Culture and the Obsession with Light Skin
Soon after moving to the Philippines, I noticed that many Filipino and especially Filipina are obsessed with skin lighteners, one could say it is part of Filipino culture. Now any time I write about Filipino culture, I run the risk of making someone angry because it doesn’t apply to them. Of course it doesn’t apply to everyone. I often also don’t understand why someone would say about a culture and be personally offended.
I asked Jessie about this light skin obsession soon after I arrived in the Philippines. She said “I like the color of my skin.” She seemed a little defensive about the question so I let her know that I did too. That I was curious because of what I was seeing on television commercials.
There are many commercials on TV about the skin whitening abilities of their products such as lotions. Lotions and cosmetics by the same companies that advertise in the USA. Watching companies from the West advertise on Philippines television was a real eye-opener for me.
It told me that these companies will do as much to sell their products as they can get away with. I couldn’t believe some of the claims I was hearing. They seemed absurd to me then and they still do.
Today I learned that the Philippines FDA is issuing a warning about people using a drug designed for the treatment of cancer to whiten their skin. The drug is called glutathione. This drug can cause kidney failure and blood poisoning that leads to death! The FDA says that they have had reports of people becoming ill from the use of it and they suspect that medical professionals are using the drug for this purpose and that it is illegal to do so.
Light Skin and Thin Noises Often Equal Beauty In Filipino Culture
I have had Filipina comment on my thin nose and my light skin. One little cutie would just go on and on about my thin nose and light skin. She couldn’t speak very much English but she managed to get her point made. She’d stick out her finger just to touch my hands so she could touch white skin. She sometimes lives in the compound where I live. I had learned the word for dark through her but now I have forgot it.
As an experiment just now, I searched the net for “Filipina beauty queen.” Sure enough, they all had
light skin. Some noses might be a little bigger than others. They all looked just fine to me! They would look just as fine if they had dark skin. It is a Filipino culture obsession, it is not mine.
Many Filipina have a golden brown color to their skin and I love that color. Tiny women are just hot to me. Oh there I go again, some Filipino is going to be angry with me because I think the women in the Philippines are hot. Well, I do think Filipinas are beautiful on the outside and if you get to know them most are the most loving creatures on earth.
And you know what is even nicer about it, many of these beautiful and adoring women are actually interested in us older guys. We wouldn’t have a chance with such beautiful women in the USA. Well 95% of them anyway. Well, unless you have money.
Awww, he said it, Filipina are all about the money. First, that is not completely true. Is money or a better life for themselves often at the root of the attraction? Honestly, I think it usually is. But that is the root of it and not the tree of affection and love that springs up and makes itself available for us to see. These ladies usually do really love their guy. That is true if they are pinoy, white or Martians. I don’t think the same is true in the USA. There it isn’t just the root its the entire tree. I do know of Filipina that actually support their foreign boyfriends. No it is not all about the money. And this money motivation is limited to Filipino culture, it is true all over the world. The only difference is that in a poor nation, it takes less money to improve the life of a Filipina and thus it is easier to be “rich” in the Philippines especially in the eyes of Filipina.
I have seen critism on my blog from pinoy that objected to my frankly talking of one of the benefits of living in the Philippines is the low cost of living and the beautiful Filipina that we could actually have some hope of attracting. I started to reply on one such blog to ask, do they prefer ugly women and higher cost of living? I decided not to do so.
Now while these things are present in Filipino culture that doesn’t give you a free ride. If you open your mouth and say the wrong things you’ll turn that Filipina off faster than a light going out with the flick of a switch. It is very easy to do that if you have no understanding of Filipino culture. Saying the same kinds of things you might say in the West to flatter a girl could end up insulting her here.
Filipino culture amount the upper class is another story, upper class women will make it a point to make sure you know that you don’t even exist. I’ve seen it many times. They often will avoid eye contact with you. I’ve read a good deal on this subject and there are often intense pressures on them from family about who they can date and interact with.
The light skin craze seems to be even more obsessive in the upper class Filipino. It is not limited to that though. There is a comment on this blog some place of a pinoy that mentioned that he didn’t find the girl in one of my pictures to be pretty at all. Her skin was too dark and her nose too big. Though he did word it very carefully, as it is common in Filipino culture to be polite, that is what he meant.
I’ll say one last time, though a trait might be common in many people of a country that does not make it true for all. One should never assume a specific person has a certain characteristic just because it is common in the culture. Filipino culture is diverse and does not apply to an individual but to a group.
If you’d like to read other stories about Filipino culture you can find them at that link.
Now that I have finished up with this article, I think I should go do more exploration of the light skin, thin nosed beauty queen of the Philippines. You know, just to further educate myself on Filipino culture.

My gosh that woman is hot!
have you already seen how Filipino TV and movie screen stars look?they are all mestizas, and thats our Filipino idol.Colonial mentality, thats it.White Americans and Europeans are investing lots of money to get our skin color, thats it.
I don’t think American’s are trying to turn Filipino white, I think they are trying to get rich selling something, I don’t think they give a hoot if it works or not because ti doesn’t. Lotion wont turn your skin white. LOL well, unless it is paint
Andres, an American’s are obsessed with darker skin tones. It seems people all over the world want whatever they are not.
Rusty,
I am married to a beautiful brown skinned Filapina. I do understand what you are saying as a lot of Filapina’s want the light skin. I believe all women in all countries are beautiful in there own way. I do have my own prefernces as I am sure we all do. Oh and I believe the first “Beauty Queen” is my niece, by marriage of course, but a “Beauty Queen” non the less.
I use to think I had a preference and that was blondes but now, I just like women.
Where did you get the pics for the article Rusty? Was wondering where the niece’s photo’s are.
I got them while doing “research” on Filipina beauty queen. They appear to be public domain.
I NEVER had a preference for blonds. Mine has ALWAYS been an Filapina/Asian.
Gary, at 12 to 16 I had no idea what a Filipina is. Sounds like you were way ahead of me.
I LOVE the ladies with darker skin.
Tom
OKKKKK…I love the ladies with lighter skin too…heheheh
I agree on both Tom.
Lol
I was just wondering where you went too.
Yeah, I agree with you. Thought the golden tan is nice.
Tom, I wish I had a like button for this comment.
I found the interest in skin whiteners surprising initially, but then I remembered the women in the US who spend so much time sunbathing, or in tanning booths, or using skin darkening products.
Seems to me it’s the “exotic is sexy” phenomenon. When most people have light skin, dark skin is exotic. When most people have darker skin, lighter skin is exotic.
Great point Jim! You know, I have been here long enough now that some of the finer points like you mention have begun to escape me.
I think I even wrote about that three years ago. How it seems we want whatever we are not. Women in the West try to get darker in general and women in the East try to get lighter. That really speaks volumes I think.
About humans, the cultures are so VASTLY different but some things still remain the same, even if they are opposite.
I love my dark skin beauty.
It so sad that there are those are influenced by Hollywood when they have true beauty.
I agree Steve women should be happy just the way they are, much more attractive I think.
Rusty, hi!
It is a sad fact of our Philippine culture. I’ve been outside the country for most of my life. Europe mostly. And what amazed me at first was how people here in Europe compliment me for my brown skin. Like, boy, am I lucky to be born with a natural tan. That here in Europe they do everything to get that “tanned” look. Spending hours at the beach under a scorching sun during the summers, spending fortunes going to tanning salons with UV lamps just to get that “look” during winter time. And that saddens me, that most girls from my country prefer to have the “white” (pale) skin rather than the beautiful earthly color that God blessed us with. Really, really sad.
I agree with you whole heartedly Joss.
Hi Joss, sorry for my late reply. I over looked your comment until just now.
Yes you’re right. People here want to be something other than they are and people there want to be something other than what they are.
I’m sure the shrinks of the West have a term for this, something more complex than the grass is greener on the other side of the road. ha ha.
I think it is human nature to explore and be experimental though and it is a good trait that keeps us growing. Like everything, sometimes it sometimes us down a less than productive path.
In this case, I think it is mostly harmless but yes, people do damage themselves at times in this pursuit. Like most things, taking it to far can be harmful.
The skin doctors in the USA will tell you that exposure to the Sun always carries some risk but there are also some benefits.
I have to take a lot of medications and I really can’t see taking anything I don’t have too. Too many chemicals flowing around in my blood but I’d die without them.
Hi Rusty,I was told the same thing how some people in the Philippines wanted white skin and here in Canada most of the people spend big money to have a brown tan.It must be the same as people with straight hair want curly hair and straight haired people pay big money to get there hair curly.I guess it is just human nature ! Personally I like looking at all the women, colour dosen,t matter. There all beautiful to me.From Randall in Canada.(I Love Cebu )Your E book saved me a lot of money, thanks.
Wow thanks Randal, always nice to hear things like that. Can I add that to the testimonials on the web page? Very nice of you to say!
Sure, use it if you want to Rusty.
aww…when I think about a red head lady, they look great with the white skin and freckles, and a match patch.cound’nt imagine a tan on this one.
on the other hand a blonde must have a tan to look sexy to me.
The black haired lady should have brown skin to look sexy to me.
actually,I find the over the top white skinned filipina to resembal(sp)a western girl with to much make-up.Not sexy to me.
the root of the problem starts with being looked down upon from general society for earning a living as a farmer!
Fanboat, I know what you mean. I once asked Jessie why all the department stores here “ugly their girls up” was referring the often seen, caked on makeup. I’m pretty sure she said something like “you think it is ugly? Filipino don’t.”
Australian’s suffer the highest rate of skin cancer in the world because they worship the sun and tanned skin.
Filipino’s spend hard earned money on dubious products that are supposed to make their skin ‘white’.
I am attracted to tone Filipino skin color, from honey to dark brown.
They are attracted to my thin nose, blue eyes, light hair and skin.
I am attracted to younger pinoy, some are attracted to my age group.
It’s a win/win situation.
I wouldn’t say younger without putting an age qualification on it myself. With the current state of how foreigners are seen by many in the Philippines it can lead to problems.
Pinoy or Pinay? Pinoy = male.
In the eight months I lived in Cebu area I made a point of checking out the filipina companions of foreigners. Mostly as an ego boost because the one I was with was usually more beautiful. I noticed that foeigners gf’s were usually darker skinned than the average city girl there. Also that the most strikingly beautiful girls had the darkest skin, maybe because of beach and pool time in the sun with their foreigners. Yet girls there even those out to find a foreigner still feel bad if their skin is darker and try to lighten it by using whiteners and avoiding the sun. Maybe it is that the ones considered beautiful by pinoy standards, the ones with whiter skin and straighter noses are taken by the most eligible men there and not as available for foreigners.
