A couple of weeks ago, the Philippine Military announced they would drive the Abu Sayyaf out of the Philippines.  I thought at the time that’s a bold statement and likely would mean major battle in the Sulu region in the southern Philippines which is just off the mainland of Mindanao.

Today there was a major battle leaving at least 23 Philippine soldiers dead and 20 confirmed rebels were confirmed dead but they estimated that at least 40 rebels were dead but their bodies had not yet been found.

There is an article on the BBC News web site detailing the fighting with a map of the area were the fighting took place.  You can visit that site by clicking here.
