There is a group of nuns that work undercover to help girls leave there life in the Philippines sex industry behind.  In some cases they go into bars and pay their barfine so that they can leave with them.   Under normal circumstances when someone pays a girl’s barfine or early work release, the motives are not so wholesome.

Sisters of Immaculate Mary Queen of Heaven Missionaries

This order is known as Immaculate Mary Queen of Heaven Missionaries.   It seems their main purpose is to help women leave their work as prostitutes.    They do that by providing a sanctuary.  They go beyond that with providing education to the people living in the Philippines too.   They are now working to improve their educational offerings.

They realize that poverty in the Philippines is a major cause for women living in the Philippines to enter this work.  That is true but sometimes the women do it because they like earning more money.   Some girls that work in bars make more money but I think most make around 10,000 pesos a month or around $200 to $250 a month.   That may not seem like a lot to you but it is more than most Filipino earn.

The sisters are looking for sponsors.  You can visit their website for more information.

Their current sanctuary known as The House of Love is small.  It houses only 20 women and their children.   They plan to expand this to 500.  I have been unable to determine where this is located.  The only address I can find is in California.

The Best Place To Help The Poor Living In The Philippines?

There is much need for help for the poor living in the Philippines.  Something that strikes many new to living in the Philippines is the amount of poverty here.  Along with that is some degree of amazement that so many Filipino are happy despite what seems like a meager existence to us.   Perhaps, happiness doesn’t come in all the Western things most of us have come to take for granted.

To be honest, I often ask, where is the church when I see the poverty and the children sleeping on the street.  I think more can be done.  I know more should be done.   This is the first case where I learned anything is being done.  Perhaps more is being done that is obvious.

Organized religion has a lot of money and I just don’t see a lot of intervention taking place here.  As far as I can tell, the Methodist don’t even have a presence here.  I looked for a church when I first came here and couldn’t find one any place in the country.  Help should be available.  I know I would sure like to see something done to feed the people that are hungry.  And we should do it without attaching conditions.
