American Expat Living In The Philippines

Hi, my name is Rusty Ferguson.  I am an American expat living in the Philippines since February of 2008. I grew up in the Southern USA. I retired early and decided to add some excitement to my life by moving to the Philippines.

I am having the best time of my life. If you are thinking about moving to the Philippines this is the site for you. Follow along and learn how to avoid some of the mistakes I have made and some of the things that have gone well for me.

With this blog, I cover topics like living in the Philippines, the cost of living in the Philippines, Filipino cultureand the US dollar to Philippine peso exchange rate. Being a lover of photography, there are many photorgraphs throughout this blog. Nearly all of which have been taken by me.

Filipina Living In The Philippines This is Jessie.  She is Filipina and is my girlfriend. She has lived in the Philippines all her life is a great source of information for me.

She helps me with this website, mostly working in the background as my proof reader. Which is a bit ironic since English is not her first language.  Her friends from Tacloban make fun of her because when she speaks English now, she does so with a bit of a Southern Accent.

Jessie is an angel but she's got a fiesty attitude.  Since she has to deal with me day in and day out, that is a good thing.  But I lovingly call her my ornery angel at times. She treats me like a king.

Philippine Military Action: Cotabato Province

More Trouble In Mindanao

Christmas eve found violence in the Mindanao city of Cotabato. Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels are thought to be behind the attacks. Moro leaders claim that they were reacting to attacks from the Philippine army. The Philippine army claims they were not part of any offensive actions as there was a cease fire in place for Christmas.

Christmas In Bogo City

Pictures of Bogo City Christmas I ended up not being able to do some of the things I had planned on.  I really wanted to go to Christmas Mass but was unable to as I began to feel a little under the weather and we have a two year old that was half crazy on…

Flowers of Cebu

Snapped a pictures of these beautiful Philippine wild flowers growing along the highway to San Remegio town. We turned down a side road toward the bay long before heading on out of town though. It is the rural part of my walk though. One of my main routes. The buses come zooming down this road at way to high a rate of speed and a couple of times coming way to close to me. I took a bit of artistic liscense with this photo but I love it and I don’t usually love my pictures or even like them untiil they are at least three months old.

It is true, I’ll look back at a shot I took several months ago and like it. Yet, when I first “developed” it on my PC I didn’t like it at all. Usually, I think its just okay, nothing great, but not bad. Others tell me my pictures are wonderful. I don’t see it until much later. The one exception is taking pictures of children at play. If you can get the pictures without them paying attention to the camera, they tend to be fantastic. Doesn’t matter to me whose children they are. With that said, some of my favorite pictures that I took are the pictures of my children at play in the park. Often at Arkabutla lake in North Mississippi in the USA.

More Pictures While Wondering Around

Walking around the Philippines during the Christmas season brings new experiences here in Cebu. My favorite is when someone sees me and breaks out into song, usually a pre teen boy with his hand out. I sure wish I was as rich as people

Bombs in Mindanao

Two Bombs in Iligan

Terrorism in Mindanao continues to be attributed to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front as two new bombing incidence are discovered. This time it was in Northern Mindanao. It was close to Cagayan de Oro (CDO) a city that I’m often told is safe from terrorism in the Philippines.

The first bomb exploded a few hours after Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo visited the city. Three people have died due to the blast. The other bomb was discovered and defused before it was detonated. Two young men, ages 20 and 22 were killed in the blast as they worked for the market where the improvised explosive device (IED) was detonated.
