Living In The Philippines -- The Cebu Experience

American Expat Living In The Philippines

Hi, my name is Rusty Ferguson.  I am an American expat living in the Philippines since February of 2008. I grew up in the Southern USA. I retired early and decided to add some excitement to my life by moving to the Philippines.

I am having the best time of my life. If you are thinking about moving to the Philippines this is the site for you. Follow along and learn how to avoid some of the mistakes I have made and some of the things that have gone well for me.

With this blog, I cover topics like living in the Philippines, the cost of living in the Philippines, Filipino cultureand the US dollar to Philippine peso exchange rate. Being a lover of photography, there are many photorgraphs throughout this blog. Nearly all of which have been taken by me.

Filipina Living In The Philippines This is Jessie.  She is Filipina and is my girlfriend. She has lived in the Philippines all her life is a great source of information for me.

She helps me with this website, mostly working in the background as my proof reader. Which is a bit ironic since English is not her first language.  Her friends from Tacloban make fun of her because when she speaks English now, she does so with a bit of a Southern Accent.

Jessie is an angel but she's got a fiesty attitude.  Since she has to deal with me day in and day out, that is a good thing.  But I lovingly call her my ornery angel at times. She treats me like a king.

Survivors from Sunken Princess of the Stars

Philippine government officials refused to give up hope of rescuing some of the 800 people missing after MV Princess of the Stars capsized last Saturday, even as the still-roiling seas stalled efforts to get inside the vessel yesterday.

Officials of the National Disaster Coordinating Council have raised the number of confirmed survivors from 28 persons earlier in the day to 57. The confirmed dead also rose from 16 to 20.

Violence In Tabuk City

The population of Tabuk is a combination of different cultures. The town engages in commerce and trade. The town is a center of economic activity for the far-flung areas of Kalinga. Merchants from Pangasinan and other nearby provinces come to the town center to trade mostly for rice which is the major product of Kalinga.

Philippines Hammered by Typhoon Fengshen

Typhoon Fengshen renamed Typhoon Frank in the Philippines wreaks havoc on Visayas

My first typhoon was a killer. A ferry carrying over 700 people sank, leaving more than 700 missing. Around 35 were rescued after swimming to a nearby island. They were the lucky few as they didn’t even know the island was there. They only stumbled upon it. It is though more could have been saved if the passengers had been told about the nearby Island.

Typhoon Frank, as the Philippines named it, was more than a lot of hot air.  Not a lot of damage but power was out for two days.  More to come soon, just a quick post in case someone in the states actually even knows about the storm.  🙂

My First Typhoon, Typhoon Fengshen

Typhoon Fengshen

Dang this thing is still one day away and it is huffing and puffing and knocked our lights out for a few hours. It is just a category one typhoon! I can’t imagine staying around for a category 4 or 5 unless there was just no choice. And I’d have no choice if we had one here in the Philippines. That is very unlikely though.
